APPEAL   For the Relief of the Drought in the Horn of Africa  (cont'd)

In 2010, CVM has facilitated the following water points:
protected 38 springs
constructed of two major gravity schemes
dug 14 - hand dug wells
maintained 24 wells which were non functioning
constructed  539 latrines

Overall in 2010, 50,590 people benefited from this intervention. The construction of a well becomes a process of growth for the community that acquires skills through the training of professional figures for the maintenance and management of the structures built.

Water Committees are formed, small horticulture businesses are developed with women and the residents’ knowledge on issues related to water and sanitation are improved.

For 2011, CVMs work becomes more crucial as water points dry up, leaving whole communities without water and placing an extra burden on women and girls.
Protection and purification of 18 springs capable of providing water even in the driest months
Construction of 4 large gravity schemes
Digging 5 hand dug wells, with the beneficiary communities and maintenance of 15 abandoned wells
Formation of vegetable gardens and women's cooperatives to improve the horticulture and food security
Construction of 325 latrines

40,000 people located in very rural areas will be reached with clean water not served by other interventions.

The decrease in funding since 2010 has resulted in a reduction in activities despite the fact that CVM has 2 fully functioning, well-equipped water teams supported by 2 engineers allowing more communities to be reached if funds were available.

We appeal for your support to ensure that CVM can rapidly increase these activities quickly responding to the urgent needs of water for people, livestock and vegetables gardens affected by drought.

You too can be a DROP OF LIFE for many women, men and children of Ethiopia
